Cody Bouldering
After driving through the very beautiful Bighorn National Forest and seeing three moose, we arrived shortly in Cody,Wy. Cody, where they have a rodeo every night and still only have one hospital. We arrived late and were instantly caught in tourist traffic along the main strip of Cody. You could smell delicious meals being grilled and watch actual cowboys cross the street and give you a friendly nod. After making a quick stop at the local outdoor shop for beta, we made a short drive to our "home" for the next few days. Located above Cody is Cedar Mountain, Blm land with Joe's Valleyesque sandstone boulders. We had free camping, a town near by, and tons of bouldering at our fingertips. Is this heaven?
The first few days were spent at the Cedar Mountain area, a huge talus field located minutes from the road. We spent lots of time at the cheese boulder, enjoying the fun climbs and wonderful sunshine. Just down hill is the maze area, a literal maze of large boulders. We explored and climbed this area for two days and barely scratched the surface.
The best part about the camping at Cedar Mountain was being able to watch the rodeo every night from from our hilltop perch. Oh yeah, and the sunsets were spectacular!
After a forced rest day because of rain, we were able to climb at the Carcass Crag the next day. Being the highest area in Cody, we hoped for colder temps. But instead found scorching south facing boulders. After being attacked by bugs and sweating off holds we stopped at the Antelope boulder. A perfect boulder perched right above a cliff band. After dispatching a few climbs we made our way back to the car. It was a good end to our stay in Cody. We would pack up our camp and head to our next destination, Yellowstone/Grand Teton National Parks.
Here is a quick video of some of the climbs we did in Cody. Enjoy!
