The Midwest was flat and uneventful. They have lots of corn and corn processing facilities but no rocks. We were able to spend a night on the bank of the great Mississippi river which has always been on my to-do list.
Eventually, after hiding from the memorial day camper crowd we made it to Pennsylvania. Let me tell you about Pennsylvania, it is hot, muggy, and buggy. Black flies in particular. I hit a new record of 27 black fly bites at one time. The people are grumpy and the only camping are at state parks which they charge you extra for being out of state. I guess what I am trying to say is that I do not like the state very much.
On the bright side we were able to get a little climbing in at The Pyle boulders!
Afterwards we made our way to Gettysburg.
As we walked through the park we started hearing thunder in the distance. As we entered the museum it was sunny and as we started to leave the down pour began. We decided to run for the car which was a bad choice. We were soaked through within seconds. Moral of the story, East coast thunder storms are no joke.
After some extreme heat and muggy weather we ended up outside a staple of Philadelphia, Geno's Steaks. Well, you can only guess what happened next.
We are currently in New Jersey, about an hour inland from Surf City. That's right, we made it to the Atlantic ocean! Make all of the jokes you want about the Jersey Shore but the beaches here are perfect for soaking in the sun. We are also excited to start heading back West in hopes of better weather and catch up on our climbing.
Until then...
